Discover Douro
Discover Douro
CIM Douro · BTL 2025
Instead of selling the Douro to everyone the same way, the campaign asks each visitor what kind of traveller they are: explorer, pilgrim, taster, influencer or entrepreneur. The stand, the kiosk and the multitouch table answer that question and, at the same time, build a segmented database for the tourism communication that comes after the fair.
A 360° campaign, from concept to immersive stand, editorial book, outdoor media in Lisbon and urban activations.
The character visuals were produced with generative AI. Casting and shooting across 19 municipalities didn’t fit the deadline, and producing them in-house gave full control over the campaign’s imagery.
Role: Creative direction (with Hugo Cabral) and strategy. Coordinated a multidisciplinary team (design, development, 3D, video, at 2Play).
// Case study
Discover Douro
Nineteen municipalities selling the same thing: terraces, river, wine.
The decision was to stop describing the destination and start describing the visitor.
Discover the Douro. Discover yourself.
Instead of selling the region through its landscapes, monuments and flavours, we started from the visitor. The Douro stops being a destination and becomes a reflection of whatever each person is looking for in a journey.
Twelve typologies, five people
We mapped twelve tourism typologies and condensed them into five profiles with a face, an age and a motivation: the explorer, the pilgrim, the taster, the influencer and the entrepreneur. They stopped being report segments and became people a visitor recognises in three seconds.
Three levels of reach
The campaign was built as circles spreading out from the venue: inside the fair, across the stand and its interactive areas; around it, with street furniture, banners and character boards steering passers-by; and across the city, in train and metro stations and the airport, meeting travellers as they land in Lisbon, before they’ve even thought about the fair.
The stand as a database
The kiosk and the multitouch table weren’t decorative screens. Visitors picked the profile they identified with, had their photo taken and got the matching route by email and, in doing so, told the region who they were. What the fair left behind wasn’t a visitor count: it was a segmented database, where every contact is already tagged with the kind of tourism that moves them. From there, the Douro can speak to a wine traveller about wine and to a pilgrim about pilgrimage, long after BTL is packed away.
